Course Description

To obtain a Coxswain Grade 3 through the Declaration process you will need

  1. Recreational boat license.
  2. Complete a minimum of 1 day of commercial sea service, which we arrange on one of our commercial vessels if you do not already have it.
  3. Certificate of Medical Fitness – Domestic Seafarers (AMSA 1850). This is a basic medical that you can have done at your GP. You will need to download the form from the AMSA web site and take it with you to the GP.
  4. A current first aid certificate.

 

This course covers the second item. After completing this, you will be given an AMSA record of sea service form verifying your day of commercial sea service. The day will cover some of the practical skills for Coxswain Grade 3 required for the test and will give you exposure to an AMSA Domestic Commercial Vessel.

What We Will Cover

The Coxswain Grade 3 practical exam focuses on hands-on skills like pre-departure checks, vessel handling, navigation, and emergency procedures. Key tasks include anchoring, manoeuvring in various conditions, and mastering safety protocols. Preparation tips include practising with your vessel (if you have one), using weather apps, and reviewing operational guidelines. While this exam can be done in a day, the more days of practice you have, the better. Success relies on real-world practice and confidence in essential maritime skills. Steps To Getting Your Licence

Upon successfully completing the general boat safety training and passing the test, you’ll be eligible to apply for your licence with Service NSW.

3

You will receive a completed application form during the course, which you will need to present at Service NSW along with the appropriate licence fee.

4

You have your licence.
