Course Description
This course covers the practical training and practical assessment required to apply for your Coxswain Grade 3 and also includes the mandatory sea time on board a commercial vessel.
The Coxswain Grade 3 pathway that we offer at On Course Boat Licences is by using the Declaration form if you already hold a recreational boat licence. One of the criteria to be able to apply for Coxswain Grade 3 is that you complete a minimum of one day sea time on a commercial vessel.

Steps To Getting Your Licence
Our courses usually start at 9 am where we will review the documents you already have and go over what you will need. We then start our day of practical training before completing the assessment later in the day.
Upon completion of the practical day and practical assdessment you will be issued with a Coxswain Grade 3 Decleration which will form part of your application with AMSA.
After you have compiled your documents which will include
1. Coxswain Grade 3 Decleration
2. Recreational boat license.
3. Record of sea service (form 771)
4. Certificate of Medical Fitness – Domestic Seafarers (AMSA 1850).
5. A current first aid certificate.
You can fill in the on line application form on the AMSA web site.
You then print the form and submit it with the fee at Australia Post. It is important to note that not all Australia Post outlets accept AMSA Applications.
AMSA will asses the documents and send you a Coxswain Grade 3 Certifiacte of Competance
About the Exam
The Coxswain Grade 3 exam is a practical observation. We will spend time on a boat in a marina and observe you in the following areas.
- Vessel, crew and passenger preparation
- Weather and tides
- Navigation
- Manoeuvring
- Rope work
- Emergencies
It is a fun friendly environment and you will be given every opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned prior to the assesment.
