Coxswain Grade 3 is the ideal starting point for anyone looking to start a career in boating. The marine industry frequently needs skilled crew members to transport passengers and cargo and perform essential services. The Coxswain Grade 3 Certificate, is an entry level qualification that allows you to undertake some off the common low complexity roles such as driving boats in marinas, operating super yacht tenders, and some other low-complexity jobs.
To help you obtain your Coxswain Grade 3 Certificate, On Course Boat Licences offers a hands-on course where you will be taught and assessed on a series of tasks aboard our vessels. There are a few different pathways to obtaining a coxswain grade 3 and the method we use at On Course Boat Licences is via the Declaration. To qualify for this you will need.
- Recreational boat license.
- Complete a minimum of 1 day of commercial sea service, which we arrange on one of our commercial vessels if you do not already have it.
- Certificate of Medical Fitness – Domestic Seafarers (AMSA 1850). This is a basic medical that you can have done at your GP. You will need to download the form from the AMSA web site and take it with you to the GP.
- A current first aid certificate.

Steps To Getting Your Licence
Our courses usually start at 9 am where we will review the documents you already have and go over what you will need. We then start our day of practical training before completing the assessment later in the day.
After you have compiled your documents which will include
1. Coxswain Grade 3 Decleration
2. Recreational boat license.
3. Record of sea service (form 771)
4. Certificate of Medical Fitness – Domestic Seafarers (AMSA 1850).
5. A current first aid certificate.
You can fill in the on line application form on the AMSA web site.
You then print the form and submit it with the fee at Australia Post. It is important to note that not all Australia Post outlets accept AMSA Applications.
About the Exam
The Coxswain Grade 3 exam is a practical observation. We will spend time on a boat in a marina and observe you in the following areas.
- Vessel, crew and passenger preparation
- Weather and tides
- Navigation
- Manoeuvring
- Rope work
- Emergencies
It is a fun friendly environment and you will be given every opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned prior to the assesment.
